I'm at ICE again.
As the march was leaving the park a Portland Street car came up from behind, the crowd parted to let the streetcar through. For a few short blocks a Portland bureau of transportation SUV followed the protest making sure no cars could get near the crowd. Weird.
So in case I get shot I just want to get this out here. The snipers are back out tonight, I found a good position to take pictures of them I took a few one of them started looking back at me with binoculars. His rifle is now aimed at me.
This was the first picture, I'm going to try to post these chronologically. after I noticed these rifles were posted on the top of the ice building I walked about a half block away to get a better angle.
Here's the entire roof line
When I got to the better vantage point this is what I saw looking back at me.
Another shot of the entire roof line.
The person with binoculars then turned one of the rifles towards me.
This is the moment I thought I was going to get shot. He started to put his binoculars down, I stopped taking pictures and walked away.
All of this happened in the span of about 5 minutes. I'm wearing a blue hat with bright yellow letters that says "press". I'm curious what sort of threat I presented to have him posture towards me like that.
Officers rushed out a moment ago, there's a lot going on, at least one arrest was made. A flash bang at the end of the video causes me to accidentally stop filming for a second.
And just like that a small (extremely one-sided) battle erupts on the streets of Portland.
The the white fog machine is out. When I heard it start I walked out to get a clear video. An officer armed with an assault rifle motions for me to cross the street, as I do so I'm then told to move back, the officer continues to walk aggressively towards me for almost a block.
It was unclear what direction or what area he wanted me to be in. I suspect he motioned for me to be in the street so I would be at fault and he could push me further back.
I had to watch that video again a couple times to make sure what I heard when I was taking the video is correct. I believe one of the officers off camera in the street and armed with an assault rifle chambers a round. Sound happens around the 16 second mark.
After getting pushed back in those last videos, I noticed that the snipers had shifted, and were now actively aiming at protesters.
The dance between officers and protesters continued to influence the snipers throughout the night. Even with clouds of smoke and tear gas drifting up towards the unmasked snipers they remained.
Here's a decent shot of the tear gas leaf blower.
This is one of my last shots for the night. I'm already back at the hotel and safe.
