I can’t require or expect anyone to see me the way I see myself. No one can. It’s part of the human condition that each person’s self-perception is different from the way others see them.
Somehow, whether through queer theory or in some other way, a general blurring has taken place between facts & beliefs, to the extent that some people apparently believe just about everything is subjective. Society can’t work like that.We need a shared reality, a shared language.
No one can change their date or place of birth, or their birth sex. To some people that’s a cruel reality. Unbearably cruel in some cases. Even so, it is neither kind nor sustainable to adopt a person’s view that their sex, age or place of birth are different from those recorded.
It is ultimately not kind to those concerned, and it is not kind to those trying their hardest to accommodate, to adapt, to suppress their knowledge, and in many cases simply to pretend. And it is certainly not kind to those who can’t or won’t suppress their knowledge.
The current wave of narcissism needs to end. Let’s be kind to each other by all means. But kindness is not about lies. It is not about trying to figure out who is the worthiest victim. It’s about treating each person decently as a unique individual. And holding firm to the truth.
