Today's #lostpirsonsofDublin is a debtors prison connected to the Liberty of St. Thomas and Donore. Originally part of the medieval Abbey of St. Thomas on Thomas Street, its land and privileges were granted to the Brabazon family (later the Earls of Meath) in the 16th century
The debtor’s prison attached to St. Thomas's Court was just a house on Marrowbone Lane. In 1823 the Inspector of Prisons found 'the only prisoner...lying on straw covered with a piece of carpet, without any fire, and confined to his bed from the want of a shirt or other clothing'
Most manor courts and their associated debtors prisons were abolished in 1827. The building which housed the court survived until 1897 when it was demolished. Its former location now seems to be the green area at the intersection of Pimlico and Marrowbone Lane.
