Its probably no surprise to any of you but episode 7 Crybaby Saxophone of Hibike Euphonium is my favourite of the series. It develops Haruka's in such a wonderful that I will use this thread to explain why I love it so much and showcase this episode
Since the start of the series we have seen a fair amount of her for a side character, but always from the perspective of Kumiko. We know she is not confident in her role, relies on Asuka, seems to love band and is a sweet person. Not the typical leader type
Skip to episode 7 and not much has changed but, Aoi quitting the band sets off all her insecurities in her.
To her, seeing her friend quit validates her belief that she isnt fit to be the leader.
To her, seeing her friend quit validates her belief that she isnt fit to be the leader.
Now crushed by the sense of defeat/hopelesness, she lashes to the closest innocent bystander looking to have her lack of self worth validated, which convieniently is Kumiko who does her best to comfort her but lacks the wordsto get through her
Then comes Asuka, who compared to Kumiko, does not mince her words and tells Haruka not what she wants to hear but what she needs in the most brutal way possible calling her out on her bullshit
Haruka goes through a full circle of emotions going from angry, momentarily collecting herself, anger again, desperation, blaming Asuka, to finally accept defeat
while Asuka had the abilty to make Haruka hit rock bottom, she is not the one who can bring her back up
The madonna of the band had to take care of this job
The madonna of the band had to take care of this job
that whole scene in Haruka's little intimate room (that is sooo aesthetic btw 10/10 love her room looks so cozy)
Kaori gets through Haruka making her understand that the whole believes in her and she thinks it takes guts to take over the band after what it was last year
Kaori gets through Haruka making her understand that the whole believes in her and she thinks it takes guts to take over the band after what it was last year
It looks easy for Kaori to comfort her friend, but at the start of the exchange, Haruka closes herself phisically but through the power of potatos, Kaori manages to get her point accross giving Haruka the confidence she needs to properly open up
After this new found purpose and with a more level head, she hears her friend out a second time now knowing that she could not have helped her. but also seeing in her the path of quitting the band she could have chosen
However, Haruka did not quit! She went back on center stage ready to lead the band they trust as their leader as the next piece begins.
