It’s kind of perverse to me that New Zealand keeps being held up as a global leader for its #COVID19 response. Hailed for its “empathetic” approach. They’ve done nothing but look out for themselves. https://twitter.com/siouxsiew/status/1353927551530373121
Any citizens living abroad wanting to visit family are charged thousands of $$ to sit in quarantine for 2 weeks. Locals complained that by sitting in quarantine (to protect the locals from covid exposure) the returnees were getting a free taxpayer funded vacation. Empathy? /2
Not only that - 68% of Kiwis have said they don’t want any foreigners coming in - even if they quarantine first and pay for it. This includes students who travel to study. What public health justification could there be for that? Xenophobia or empathy? /3 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12354081
New Zealand has hermetically sealed itself off from the rest of the world. No one has covid. Yet they plan to start vaccinating citizens whilst thousands of people are dying abroad every day. How is that fair or equitable? Or empathetic? /4 https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2021/1/26/new-zealand-may-approve-first-covid-vaccination-next-week
Kiwis all over Twitter tut-tut the rest of the world and brag about themselves. If only everyone else had “followed the science” like them. Without the actual scientific breakthroughs - creating incredible vaccines (which NZ had nothing to do with) NZ would be royally screwed. /5
New Zealand has contributed virtually nothing to the global fight against covid. Certainly no science. It’s put it’s hand out to receive a vaccine, outbidding third world nations with actual covid exposure who fall further down the queue. /6
No country on earth is more terrified of #covid19 than New Zealand. They have used its advantage of being one of the most isolated nations on earth to save itself. And the locals are thrilled about it. But have they just kicked the can down the road? /7 https://twitter.com/chezpim/status/1353435145726947328
There is no strategy for reopening the borders to the rest of the world. Jacinda Ardern has said all kiwis must be vaccinated first. But not every New Zealander will be vaccinated + not approved for use in children.
There is no exit strategy. /8 https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/26/new-zealand-borders-to-stay-closed-until-citizens-are-vaccinated-and-protected

NZ likes to pretend it’s an important player on the world stage. That it punches above its weight. How can anyone take it seriously as a global player going forward?
We now know they will just pull up the draw bridge at the first hint of trouble and wait to be saved. /9/9
