One of the things that really gets on my nerves when people start playing Napoleon vs Wellington top trumps is when people claim 'Wellington has no legacy'. It's so silly because it is so demonstrably untrue: #WellingtonWednesday
His prodigious military achievements aside, Wellington’s government was responsible for passing the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829; extending civil rights after years of anti-Catholic discrimination. His reputation was battered in the press for it.
He was instrumental in the foundation of Kings College London, whose alumni have been involved in discovering the structure of DNA, pioneering IVF treatment and theorising the existence of the Higgs-Bosun particle.
During his tenure as Constable, he cleaned up and improved the Tower of London and laid the first stone of the ‘Waterloo Block’ on 14 June 1845. He ended the practice of selling the post of Yeoman Warder, instead awarding it to those with distinguished military service.
As Constable, he was also responsible for having the menagerie from the Tower moved to a new home; thus creating what we now know as London Zoo. The Zoo daily occurrence book notes his visit on day one.
All in all I'd say that's pretty bloody impressive for someone with 'no legacy'! #WellingtonWednesday
