I’m a young priest, the youngest in my diocese, something my brothers won’t let me forget! But as a young priest, the article acknowledged below is troubling, bc of poor practice by a couple priests, yes, but also bc it paints an unfair picture of a “growing trend” that isn’t one https://twitter.com/jdflynn/status/1354554629455966208
at all. I have priest friends, who are all young, all over the country, who all went to different seminaries. I have not once heard a story like this about or from one of them. Our seminary formation was heavily influenced by V2. We read the documents many times.
I don’t think it’s intellectually honest to take an article about a couple priests with poor judgment and pastoral skill at a couple of parishes in one diocese out of the almost 200 in the country, and say that it’s a growing trend. If it is, I feel like I would have heard about
it present in at least one of the dioceses I have friends in.

There’s a lot more I feel, especially about the alleged “anti Vatican II” sentiment of young priests. Especially in that humans are very reactive, and neither the period of experimentation right after the Council nor
the reaction to that of saying only EF Mass is valid are authentically Vatican II.

I’m a young priest. I wear a cassock sometimes, and more ornate vestments, and I chant and use incense. I’m at one of the more “progressive” parishes in my diocese and no one has raised issue
because I’m not “conservative” and I’m not “liberal.” I’m just Catholic. I’m just Fr. Tony, & I try to not be a jerk. I’ll chant the Mass propers, use incense, wear my cassock, and I’ll give a homily on the Church’s social teaching
on racism or immigration and go to a protest (which I have).

The key seems to be: let’s just not be jerks. Let’s put the good of people and bringing them closer to Jesus over our preferences, on “both sides.”
And if we bring V2 into it, let’s read the documents, & see the beautiful treasures the Church gives us!

Just *my* opinion, open to dialogue, etc. Thread over.
