Some personal news: I wrote a book called Marjorie Taylor Greene For Dummies. Turns out it’s a pretty short book, so I’m giving it away for free in a twitter thread. 1/
(for the comprehensive version that will explain how confrontational politics adherents feed the outrage machine that created our current political landscape, check out the No Compromise podcast I did with @TwitrHagen.) OK — back to Marjorie… 2/
These “crazy” videos and posts that have been “discovered” by national journalists lately? They aren’t new. They aren’t scoops. They’re how MTG became popular in the first place. 3/
She built her name in far-right MAGA meme culture, by making these stupid videos and posts and everything else that is being rediscovered by people who weren’t paying attention a year ago. 4/
In other words, Marjorie Taylor Greene is a professional shitposter. She was born in it, molded by it. Her fans and Republican voters in her district love her for it, in the same way that MAGA nation cares more about owning the libs than governance. 5/
To Marjorie Taylor Greene and her ilk, this is all a game. And the rules are simple. Step one: create controversy, preferably by attacking the libs. 6/
Step two: Remain defiant in the face of controversy, and DOUBLE DOWN. 7/
Step three: Make sure your base knows how much you’re owning the libs, or the RINOs, or whomever you’ve chosen as your enemy. 8/
Step four: Ask your base for money, then repeat steps 1-4. That’s literally the whole game. It won’t matter if leadership takes away her committee assignments. If she has a platform (thru her Congressional seat, thru media attention, etc.) she will keep playing the game. 9/
And this game is really a political strategy, called Confrontational Politics. The idea is that only a small percentage of voters can really be swayed one way or another. But rather than woo voters with moderation, you excite them with us v. them scorched-earth warfare 10/
Our podcast is about gun rights activists who don’t just follow this Confrontational Politics strategy, some of them teach it, across the country. One of them is Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Chief of Staff. Can you imagine how influential the CoS might be to a political newcomer? 11/
