I think I have crunched the numbers and it is possible for JD, on an assistant professor (UGC pay scale) to be able to afford JD on a daily basis.
So JD is a professor and Dean of Student Affairs at a fairly big and popular college in Chennai (stand in for Loyola)
This would mean his salary would be roughly about 60k a month. Iirc my UGC+net etc numbers which for some reason I looked at last year
This says 45kish for an assistant professor in 2017. He's definitely more senior given Dean. Plus office bearers get an extra 3k or so I think per month.
Hence my guess at 60k a month that JD gets paid.
Rents - monthly rents - in your middle-ground Triplicane mansion is about 6k for a single person room. Cheaper if you share.
Didn't look like the most fancy place, from that sofa dance sequence so say 7k at the higher end?
From the film, he's mostly home after 6pm and rarely goes out. Given what o know about Triplicane mansion dwellers food habits etc he's probably living off tea and the occasional biryani. He cooks maybe an omelette or two a week and the occasional rice.
So say, 5k a month on food? Outer limit? Plus he has friends over some days who presumably buy some food or chips etc for him.
So this I found. The film says he lives in a mansion called Madras. But it didn't seem as fancy as this but still...
So the numbers so far.

Monthly income: 60,000
Rent: 9500
Food: 6000

He drives an old car. Assuming it's a bit of a petrol guzzler, let's say some 7k a month for petrol?

That leaves about 38k a month for alcohol
This is JD full on the market. Tasmac premium, say, brings to 5.5k a pop.

So with 38k on hand after spending on other things (assumptions here based on some in-film evidence etc)
This leaves him with about 6-7 bottles a month. Perhaps more if friends and former students chip in
This is being very conservative with his income, liberal with his food and rent and petrol expenses, and conservative again with alco expenses.

My guess, he'd have enough money per month, on his own, to be able to afford one bottle a day
New evidence from Prof @mformuttley
If his salary is 1.2 lakhs a month, and given the same level of expense then he can afford more than a bottle a month. But even if - as Muttley says, pay stagnates and he has a cat to feed
he can easily live on 80k/pm https://twitter.com/mformuttley/status/1355782795390423044?s=20
Per day, my bad.
At 80 K, after spending 10K + 6K + 7K + 3K (rent, food, petrol, cat food+exps) 26K a month, he'd have 54K a month to spend on JD.
Well
