I’ve never explored the Northern Plains in winter, so I embarked on a socially distanced, at times bone chilling, adventure this week.

Starting with a new personal favorite in North Dakota...

Abandoned road trip, a thread:
The photos started in South Dakota at this abandoned schoolyard, partly turned vehicle graveyard.
The most highly anticipated stop was at the abandoned San Haven State Asylum near the Canadian border in North Dakota. Next time I visit, I’ll try to not do so on a day with below zero (Fahrenheit) temperatures.
So many emotions to feel here. I don’t know where to start. It’s just a shame this place has turned into dumpster fire. Every building in the complex has been burned at some point. In addition to the juvenile vandalism, at least one life has been lost down an elevator shaft.
More pleasant vibes from this old schoolhouse near Rugby, North Dakota.
Arena is one of my all-time favorite ghost towns. I feel fortunate to have photographed a storm here last year. It looks like the old church will soon collapse.
Add this to the list of abandoned churches in North Dakota that won’t be standing much longer.
