I’m in Georgia and I wish everyone really knew what we went through that everyone else didn’t.
There was no celebration, the day after we pulled off the upset; they stormed the Capitol.
I was stationed here as a military spouse and what I’ve seen here is beyond explanation.

There’s no way for someone who wasn’t here to understand.
There’s segregation everywhere here, racism that is very, very clear. You can’t hide from that in Georgia.

suppression, education inequality, so many things that didn’t happen where I was from.

racism is systemic and engrained.
Here in the south, it’s open. It’s never been hidden.

Ahmaud went out for a jog 2 hours or so from
my front door and never made it home. His murder was covered up by the local police for months.
These things are normal here.
Normal. It’s breathtaking how normal.

But after everyone else wrapped up their elections.
Georgia had to look the nasty run off in the face. The run off that was designed to make it harder for people to vote. Harder for Black people to vote.
Don’t get me wrong it, benefited us this time obviously but what that

Don’t get me wrong it, benefited us this time obviously but what that
meant for us here in Georgia is that we became the unwilling recipients of the most expensive campaign in history.
Again, Georgia is a very proud racist state so they had zero issue with their adds looking and sounding that way.

very few people to check us all in.

I took a friend to vote on Election Day in a blue county and
there was no line- just in and out and done.
Meanwhile, in my county there was voter intimidation and hours and hours of waits.
We endured though. I’m using “we” very liberally here though because as a white woman of privilege, whose not from here I felt like an outsider.

It still feels like I just lucked out and got to be here for that awesome experience. Because we did it!!
But. What I know.
What everyone should know is, the only reason it hadn’t been done before is because the white people in this state simply did not allow it too.

There was really no time to talk about any of this though as the day after we won, the people who would like to see Georgia’s suppression as the normal and not the exception stormed the fucking Capitol.
And then they went fucking home. Then they got tracked down costing who

knows how much in taxes, arrested and THEN THEY WERE FUCKING ReLeAsEd.
When I tell you I was ready to drive to DC to defend the Capitol myself- I mean I literally wanted to jump through my tv.
For us here in Georgia it was a build to that moment. Nobody here was surprised.

Shocked, ya. But surprised lol no.
I think most of us were probably happy it was there and not any of our houses labeled with Biden/Warnock/ Ossoff signs.
I was worried. We talked about those damn signs like we painted a red X on our door.

My neighbors flew trump flags
for 4+ years. Dozens and dozens of neighbors.
I was the first to put out any Democrat signs. I would’ve been the only but I literally took my neighbor signs and somewhat guilted him into putting them up. “If we all did it they wouldn’t be so bold!”

began to walk my culdesac. Before it was only a few white women and the occasional coupe but now everyone who walks walks up to here and then wherever.
We don’t believe in keeping our signs up but we could clearly see what was bringing our neighbors around so my husband asked

me to get different flags to hang up that let our neighbors know we are a safe place.
As someone who grew up in a Union state, in a town that had an Underground Railroad Museum, I can’t quite explain how the fuck that feels.
Other than to say it feels and is gross.

Things should’ve been changed. Things should’ve never been this way.
But what I know as someone living up in an ignorant state- most people there JUST assumed these things no longer happened.
Iowa’s education system is one of the best in the nation and I HAD NO idea.

That’s why @nhannahjones The 1619 Project or @ava’s 13th are so so so important.

still so quick to throw money at a person instead of a community or a project that will do more. Why donate to goodwill instead of a foster kid drive?
Because it’s easier. Why blame instead of taking accountability? I don’t know. I’m autistic, I’m only honest.

I just have to believe if we all truly stopped for a second before we donated to a campaign thousands of miles away and did a quick Google search on our own communities we would’ve found many, many more ways to actually make a difference.
I can’t say if the ads worked or not-
I can’t say if the ads worked or not-
If the money worked.
I doubt it though, I bet the republicans raised more money.
So what was the difference? Grassroots. Ground level. Hard work.
Focus on that. Make your area better, elect better officials. Stop feeding the system that is broken.
Reset.
