Unrelated to the topic, but in my 20s I used to be vocal about things at work. It created an expectation among my team, every time there was a concern or something wrong people expected me to say something. It took me a while to realise how dangerous a game I was playing
They’d hype me up with words like “you’re very brave” or “you tell it like it is”. Great, my bravery helped sort out certain issues, but it made me a target to the management. I was being watched
Every little mistake I made was highlighted in neon yellow and those people who hyped me up couldn’t save me during performance reviews
Looking back, there was nothing wrong with what I did. In fact I did the right thing standing up for what’s right. The tricky part though is that I hadn’t earned my stripes to have those balls, I had more to lose by speaking up
As it stands, I’m still not at a level where I can just say whatever I want. I can be replaced tomorrow morning. The only difference is that I have years of experience to make me wiser and play the game better
