Having read account(s) of today’s NEC meeting, and having served on it from 2007 to 2015, I would have voted for the motion. I am very supportive of moves to put a specific mechanism resolution to Conference covering all statutory elections.
I also agree we should seek the support of other political parties to amend equalities legislation to cover BAME and disabled persons.
It still remains with me at vetting sessions for the 2012 Council elections how few women, BAME and disabled people were putting themselves forward, and was one of the 1st on the NEC at that time to push for change and put mechanisms in place.
As a party we need to ensure that we have a diverse range of candidates in place that represent the communities we seek to serve. Today’s decision will give a boost to BAME and disabled members and also send a message to voters that we have candidates to appeal to all communities
