1/4 I live in a adjacent country. I am not a fan of Aung San Soo Kyi, I am also not a fan of the Myanmar military.
Here's what most people don't understand about Myanmar.
There are 5 distinct ethnic groups who would slaughter each other without some form of strong centralised https://twitter.com/grantstern/status/1356042452524814337
2/4 power. It is breathtakingly corrupt. Corruption on an epic scale by Aung Sans dad that led to the first military coup. The western model of democracy offered no solution. The Burmese people are a source of cheap labour all over SE Asia and treated like shit in those
3/4 countries. Do not view Aung Sang as some sort of saintly liberal heroine. This problem is way more nuanced than that. The vast majority of the population are rural agricultural and are untroubled by whoever rules the capital as long as they get a fair price for their produce
4/4 and are left alone to get on with their lives.
This is true of many such so called troubled nations. The governments control the only big cities, Afghanistan is the same. Local politics matters and this is largely on familial and tribal lines.
