if nathan chen is still in the top 2 in 2027 i will eat my words but he is a rival for yuzuru for the reigning world champion. not the goat. he won’t be the goat. yuzuru is and always will be
this is yuzuru’s 11th senior division. his first win came when it was still possible to podium on your pcs score. he has remained at the top of his game through injury after injury, while skating generations AFTER HIM are forced to retire.
not only has he kept up with the quad evolution that people blame him for (like he was the only one doing quad sal at sochi 2014???), he has beaten everyone at it. learning new jumps at his age can and HAS broken skaters. not him
and yet so many fs blogs and media (esp US media cos obvs nathan’s their baby(tho they should still credit yuzu with what yuzu has won & not legit MAKE UP titles for nathan)) make out like it’s somehow embarrassing for him to still have more to give, more to take, more to win.
i wasn’t expecting to go on a figure skating rant at 2:15am when i have to be up in 4 hours for work but i just rewatched a jnats2020 technical analysis and for him to consistently keep those edges clean, those jumps not pre-rotated at all, and the pcs that high
while being underscored and having dodgy tech calls made on him and still wanting to keep going? truly a legend. meanwhile judges keep basically equating pcs with tes for us and russian skaters (jason brown excepting) so tech skaters get over scored.
so many crossovers in your step sequence do not a level 4 make. yet they still get it. so many crossovers and a three turn in your jump lead up does not a “creative and unexpected entry” GOE tick get. but they still get +5 when they score yuzu +3 on a 3A spread eagle sandwich
and he’s not even close to retirement yet (unless he ends up with a career ending injury). although i do think he will go if he lands a 4A first.
this whole thing started cos i saw a us article that glossed over yuzu’s 2 olympic wins and said nathan had won 1 more world championships than he has and then went on to say nathan is the greatest skater the world has ever seen
