In January, Jeyasre Kathiravel, a 20-year-old Dalit garment worker at an @hm supplier in India was found dead in farmland near her home. Her family believe she was raped before she was murdered - having endured months of harassment by a factory supervisor.
Jeyasre Kathiravel's murder once more shows how the fashion industry is built on, and runs on, violence: Industrial violence against garment workers, gendered violence against women, and racial violence against the Global South.
@hm use factories in Tamil Nadu - this one was Natchi Apparels in Kaithian Kottai - because they offer a very cheap price for clothing.
A cheap price that is ONLY possible because the women who make the clothes, women like Jeyasre Kathiravel, are systematically silenced.
A cheap price that is ONLY possible because the women who make the clothes, women like Jeyasre Kathiravel, are systematically silenced.
Systematically silenced when they try to talk about poverty wages, the lack of sick pay, or in this case endemic sexual violence.
Now mobs are even trying to silence Jeyasre Kathiravel's family. This is the logic of capitalism and of the fashion industry - violence and silence.

When women are being harassed, attacked, and murdered because of where they work - ethical promises by companies by @hm are not just meaningless, they are an insult to the dead.
