Cis White men dominate Twitter. A SW professor once said that a simple way to amplify those who hold more marginalized identities (in this case, anyone but a cis White man) is to have a retweet ratio that skews heavily away from retweets of cis White men.
If you consider yourself an advocate for social justice, look at who you have retweeted for your past 100 retweets. If it’s mostly cis White men, fix that pattern ASAP. And if it’s mostly White women of any gender, ask yourself why you do not retweet BIPOC womxn.
Undo retweets if you must. I know I regularly do that when reviewing my retweets and examining my biases.
If you need suggestions for who to follow, here’s a very small list of the literal millions of BIPOC geniuses on Twitter : @choo_ek @PrestonMitchum @ElieNYC @KizzyPhD @MsPackyetti @RachelCargle @TheAmandaGorman @RepBowman @jessicamalaty @RepJayapal @AyannaPressley @CoriBush
This list contains a good mix of politicians, celebs, policy wonks, journalists, comedians, anti-racism educators, doctors, scientists, health experts, and academics so hopefully just about anyone can find someone whose interests match their own.
Then look at who those people follow and follow the BIPOC people they follow too. Voila- you’ve just increased the number BIPOC individuals you follow by ten-fold.
Last batch for the night because I have to finish some work and attempt to go to bed at a reasonable hour LOLZ #phdstudentproblems : @pronounced_ing @JennMJacksonPhD @aoc @JulianCastro @TeachMrReed @letisha122 @BumpusLab @iaahmed123 @LMSegui @andreagonram @RepValDemings
