All I’m saying is that if schools are so important, why haven’t y’all funded them for the past 20 years?
See: Leandro.

“The Leandro case started in 1994 when families from five low-wealth counties sued the state, claiming North Carolina was not providing their kids with the same educational opportunities as students in higher-income districts.”

“Yet, 20‑plus years later, the state has not yet met its obligation to provide education that meets this constitutional standard.” Report link: https://www.wested.org/wested-news/sound-basic-education-for-all-an-action-plan-for-north-carolina/
“Our team conducted multiple studies addressing access to effective educators, access to effective school leaders, adequate and equitable school funding and other resources, and adequate accountability and assessment systems.” cont.
“The research was used to inform the development of recommendations for a multi-year action plan to ensure all children in the state have the opportunity to have a sound, basic education.” https://www.ednc.org/leandro-report-released-what-it-will-take-for-nc-children-to-receive-sound-basic-education/
Of course NCGA GOP will tout the inc. in funding (not keeping up with inflation) and their laughable teacher raises (same) and say we spend plenty.
Berger, from the EdNC article: “NC already spends a higher share of its revenue on schools than 33 other states..”

Meanwhile... our per pupil spending is still ABYSMAL.
FYI: you want to be above the line.

Now, we do a decent job of funding high-poverty and low-poverty districts equally. Although we could do better.
So our funding is low, but we give it out pretty equally.
(I had MS on the graph below but it overlapped too much with NC so I removed it. Ponder that.)

But y’all, it’s this one that gets me. For all the claims by legislators, we still spend a TINY fraction of our state wealth in education.
We aren’t making an effort.
Teachers buy their own supplies every single day, while lawmakers hoard funds and give tax breaks to corps.

So many people out here screaming “open the schools!”
How about we FUND THE SCHOOLS.
(Btw, schools aren’t closed even if the bldgs are. & I believe we can create a safer plan for getting the stdts who need it most back in the bldg, but again, priorities.)

If you’re in any way involved with or interested in education in NC, you really owe yourself a good google of Leandro. Particularly try to at least skim the report or its parts/smaller reports. (Disclaimer: I have not read every word of the report.)
Y’all let me know if anybody does a good thread on teacher ed/training & retention or salary comparisons incl inflation for NC. I’m too tired today.
On the current salary schedule, I’ll get a $2200 raise in ten years and then that will be my salary for the rest of my career.
