I’m going to make a “why masks don’t work” thread today...
Let’s start with respirators
Respirators do provides some* protection for the wearer
However, they do absolutely nothing to stop exhaled aerosols
Exhaled breath goes out a “one way” valve, unfiltered https://twitter.com/stonesculptorjn/status/1354438667767574529

So, you can be in full compliance with the masking mandates, by wearing a respirator, but you will be doing nothing to protect others, which is supposedly the point

Respirators do provide some* protection for the wearer
However, there are two problems...
a) a medical respirator will filter most viral particles, but not all
SARS-CoV-2 is about 0.3 microns in size; this is close to the limit of what can be filtered by medical respirators

b) the bigger problem is leakage
The reason why the respirator that I’m wearing in the photo is relatively effective is not because of the filters
A particle of stone dust is about 300,000 X larger than a corona virus, so much easier to filter...

So, the reason why my new full face shield respirator is better than a half-mask respirator is that I’m able to get a good seal, so the air is forced to go through the filters rather than leaking around the edges. This is not easy to achieve, though...
The respirator has to fit properly, you can’t have any facial hair and your skin can not be wrinkled, or you will get lots of leakage
You might notice on my photo I accidentally got some of my hair between my face & the respirator; that is enough to cause leakage...

There can also be some leakage through the “one way” valves
How do I know this, you might ask?
Because after a long heavy sculpting session, when I took off the respirator, I could see the dust on my face where it was leaking in & of course it would be in my nostrils

As for the N-95 “medical respirators” they supposedly filter about 95% of viruses, but, the LEAKAGE must be significant
They don’t create/maintain a good seal. So the air will tend to go around rather than through

Ok, let’s move on to cloth masks & “surgical masks”
We have the same problems as with respirators, but worse
To begin with, listen to what the manufacturers say...
They warn that their masks are not effective at filtering viruses
You should listen to them, they are correct

Studies have shown penetration rates of over 95% for cloth masks & 45% for surgical masks
These masks will stop most larger “micro droplets” but not the finer aerosols https://twitter.com/blnewsmedia/status/1354808926991081476

There is a simple experiment that anyone can do, that clearly shows aerosols penetrating & leaking out of cloth masks & surgical masks
It doesn’t matter how many masks you wear, either
Either aerosols will escape, or you will suffocate
Either aerosols will escape, or you will suffocate
So, these masks could help to reduce transmission, if the primary route of transmission is touch/contact with surfaces that have been contaminated by virus & then touching your eyes or nose or mouth, because the do stop most* large micro droplets from escaping, but not all...
However, many scientists believe the primary route of infection is via inhalation of aerosols
If we are correct, masks are useless
Because as I have shown you aerosols go through & around
Aerosols can then travel up to 30’ & hang in the air on lazy air currents, for hours

So, let’s let look at some more studies...
This one shows that a community masking recommendation, did not make any difference for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the real world
