I attended a "walk thru" memorial for a Bay Mills tribal elder who had died from COVID-19. He was a respected elder, a teacher of our culture, a veteran, a husband, a dad, and a grandpa.

His family pulled me aside and asked me to share something publicly...
This elder had received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in late December. He was exposed the following day, and hospitalized with COVID-19 shortly after that.

His family is asking that people "stick with the guidelines" until more people are safe.
They want others to not let their guard down after getting a single vaccine dose, or to use their vaccination is an excuse to avoid wearing masks.

They also wanted me to share with others that you should get fully vaccinated when you can, and wear masks around others.
I was told that our tribal elder discussed this ask with his family while he was hospitalized, and before he died.

In his final days, he and his family were thinking of you and your family; and, how to keep you safe.

It is an incredible act of love and compassion for others.
The toll of this pandemic is enormous. It has led to death, pain, & suffering in every corner of the world.

But, it has revealed enormous kindness, love, & compassion.

Get vaccinated. Wear your mask. Do it for the people you love. Do it because people love you.
