Working & staying motivated after a year of pandemic + political turmoil + isolation is 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱. You might think that me, or your colleagues, or someone else in your attention network breezes through it. That's a lie.

Instead, we fall back on the fundamentals:
• Intellectual curiosity, the joy of learning & building "in the zone".
• Connection to your customers. Or teammates. Or students. A sense that your work matters for ppl other than you.
Lacks fundamentals ⇒ Drops off my todo-list.

Some topics that mattered before might look pointless now. That's okay. You are not broken. You are just emotionally drained. Maybe temporarily burnt out.

We also allow time for ourselves & loved ones, guilt-free and shamelessly. It's one of the fundamentals – no work, however meaningful, can be done w/o recharging.
The pandemic was great for separating busywork from meaningful work. Busywork matters to the extent it enables meaningful work to continue. The skill to push through some of it is critical (see Jean), yet hard to develop during a crisis. Record any progress and reward yourself.
Finally, we rely heavily on our support network, at work or home.
You might lack one. That's more normal than you think. My main reason for this thread is to make this talk more open (beyond 1:1s) and encourage to reach out & form cliques. I found great friends in 2020 this way.
