I'm not going to pick on any one news agency but this headline and its variants need to be retired: "Sea level rise worse than previously thought" /Thread
This headline seems to be the go to for every new study, and in this particular case today many of the headlines are just factually incorrect 2/n
Many of these headlines claim that the new findings are worse than even the most dire predictions when even the authors say IN THE ABSTRACT: "some studies conclude that considerably greater sea level rise could be realized" ...than the IPCC predictions 3/n
The criticism that the IPCC sea level rise predictions may be too low is an important and I'll even add - fair - criticism, but claiming that this new study predicts far worse than before is just wrong 4/n
Let's compare the 1.35 m prediction (by 2100) in this new paper to the National Climate Assessment in the U.S. from 2018 "a rise exceeding 8 feet (2.4 m) by 2100 is physically possible". Sounds worse, right? 5/n
Don't get me wrong, sea-level rise is going to have dire impacts and they will be felt sooner than most people realize, but this continued, unabated use of the same headline is just not helpful for communicating the science 6/n
