THREAD Can I tell y'all why Black doctors are important? I spent the past 11 years thinking I had PCOS. I was living in Atlanta back in 2009 and was experiencing THE WORST cramps and cycles ever. It was to the point where I would lay on the floor in agony.
I lost count of how many times I went to the ER to only be sent home with Tylenol and lortab. I finally got a referral to see a prominent OBGYN in Atlanta and it was the most traumatic medical experience of my life.
He had me get an ultra sound to see if my ovaries were okay. In my appointment with him, I told him my symptoms and he immediately said that I had PCOS. I asked what it was and what that meant.
I'll never forget what he casually said, "it means that you're morbidly obese and will never be able to have children. He said it so casually too. He told me to lose weight and get used to having abnormal periods. I left his office feeling so defeated.
