The whole degree topic is an interesting one but also a pointless discussion.

Remember "Everyone is different" and it's a case of being in the best place at the best time.

- Do you require a degree to enter games? No
- Does it help you get a job in games? Depends

- Would you recommend getting a degree? Depends:
-- Can you afford it?
-- Do you want to do it?
-- Can you not learn what you want to learn outside of a degree?

- Are degree's beneficial? Depends, everyone has a different experience, it's never 1-1. Some topics can help.

I hated education, couldn't afford a degree and I'm in the industry.

A degree CAN help but so can self-learning. They help for different reasons and it really does depend on the project, studio and location.

One thing to note about not having a degree is I've heard (Not experienced) that it's harder to move abroad without one (This was never raised during interview processes for me last year for companies abroad) but if that's your intention you MIGHT be stuck at first.

Pros for degree:
- Qualification
- Internships
- Teamwork experience
- Connections within the industry
- Guided throughout the experience

(5/7)
Pros for self-learning:
- A LOT cheaper than a degree
- Shows that you have a drive (I'd argue It's harder to get in without a degree as your not being guided as much)
- Can "pick and choose" which modules you do
- Shows a lot of self-discipline
- In your own time

Note: I obviously don't know everything so the above is a non-exhaustive list and is based on what I've "heard" but not experienced myself RE: Degrees. I'm happy to answer questions RE: Self Taught route if people have any, other Q's will need to be answered by others.
