These resources are urgently needed by struggling renters and people who are homeless, and it’s important for the COVID bill to begin building a bridge from the immediate needs to longer term (and long-overdue) permanent solutions, as the HFSC bill does.
The bill does NOT include an extension of the eviction moratorium through September, as was in Biden proposal, because the mechanism (“reconciliation”) that the Ds will use to pass this quickly doesn’t allow for it to be included.
This makes it even more essential that @POTUS and @CDCDirector continue to use executive authority to strengthen, enforce and further extend the moratorium. We urge them to quickly do so: https://nlihc.org/sites/default/files/Recommended-Eviction-Moratorium-Letter-FINAL.pdf
Next steps: the House Financial Services Committee will vote on its bill and any filed amendments next week, Feb 10-11. Then leadership will roll all committee bills into one package for final passage. Leadership and WH aiming to enact bill by mid-March!
Contact your members of Congress and urge them to quickly enact a comprehensive COVID relief package that includes these and other essential resources for low-income and marginalized people.
