Racism is rampant in housing. It’s not uncommon that landlords of immigrant monolingual Spanish speaking tenants take advantage of language barriers & resource access, by neglecting their basic responsibility to maintain a habitable home.

But these tenants were organized. 3/6
Then the pandemic hit. Despite the eviction moratorium & failing to uphold their most basic duties as a landlord, the eviction notices started coming left & right.

And though the eviction protections were recently extended to June via #SB91, there’s the issue of rent debt. 4/6
Under #SB91 rent debt could be forgiven for tenants who lost income- BUT ONLY IF the landlord chooses to participate. Why would we leave the fate of tenants lives in the hands of landlords - especially when they have a clear record of attempting to gentrify their tenants out? 5/6
Renters were forced to take brave action just to stay safely housed before the pandemic. We need solutions to the COVID housing crisis that increase housing stability- not solutions that leave families at the mercy of slumlords. We must #CloseTheLoopholes
