Even though I've been teaching virtually for 10 months now, this week allowed me the opportunity to reflect on some of the benefits of virtual learning, and how they will hopefully carry over to the classroom once we return to normalcy. A thread (1/)
(2/) my fifth gradess have become so organized! They have documents in Teams, Canvas, One Note, Class Kick, and are able to fluidly move through the platforms to create incredible work. #vlindc #vlvibes
(3/) Students have become more empowered and invested in their own learning! They can name their areas of growth and clearly ask for support using our academic language. #vlindc #vlvibes
(4/) I used to DREAD tech days in school. So much time would have to be spent modeling skills such as labeling files, using a shared space, and sending work to me. Now, students are digital experts + have opened up a world of opportunity once we return to the class! #vlindc
(5/) Let's talk #sel. Our Morning Meeting sparks every day with the same joy, laughter and community we experienced @hearstes. Virtual MM has expanded our community, as we've been introduced to pets, family, and traditions, showing we are more connected than we ever knew #vlindc
(6/) Will there be learning loss? Maybe, but the flexible virtual schedule provided by @HearstPrincipal has led to daily targeted small groups that allows each student a chance to get extensive practice on skills tailored to their needs.. #vlindc
(7/) ...Using curricula parlance, we may not get a mile wide, but we have been able to get so much deeper into our standards, putting students on a path to success as they head into more complex math classes in middle and high school. #vlindc
(8/) Virtual learning is not for everyone, and I want nothing more than to be back in the classroom with my students, many of whom I've been lucky enough to work with for two years now. However, I do not think this has been an either/or situation, and when I look back on this...
(9/) year I will view it as one where not only did I grow as an educator, but as one where I really gained the ability to understand and LISTEN to my students. I'm so proud of all that they have accomplished in this year and can't help but feel optimistic for their future!
(10/) the reopen conversation will continue, and it should, because many students will benefit from IPL. I just hope that we can also continue to reflect on and enjoy all the successes of virtual education @dcpublicschools @DCPSChancellor @WTUTeacher @DCWard7teacher @MayorBowser
