Super Bowl Sunday - School leadership and what we can learn from the NFL - a thread that people who work @stmonicas will understand.

1. Good players canât succeed with bad coaching. The same applies in a school. Great teachers canât be great in the classroom with poor and unfocused leadership. Coaches look to improve their players and make their jobs easier. So should school leaders.
2. The best NFL teams are clear about their offensive and defensive systems. They draft based on this. Schools should look to do the same. When we recruit do new staff fit our system? Are we clear exactly what each âpositionâ entails?
3. The NFL is a team game. Not everyone gets to touch the ball. In a school not everyone gets to be front and centre. But the best NFL teams see MORE value in an unsung hero (nose tackle anyone?) who does their job so some of else can do theirs.
4. Our office staff, admin staff, ICT staff and pastoral staff are vital. They do their jobs so teachers can teach as well as they can. But neither of these groups can do their job without the other. Thatâs why if you win the Super Bowl EVERYONE gets a ring -not just players.
5. EXECUTION is the key in the NFL. Coaching plans are precise and the players stick to it. The best schools ensure routine execution is done well, as it makes life easier for everyone. A blown NFL play costs you points. Blown routines in school disrupt learning.
6. Team culture #doyourjob defines the best teams. Being accountable to another player creates those team bonds. Blockers support skill players. The same applies in schools. Putting aside your needs for the team (âyep- Iâll help with lunch duty!) makes a difference.
7. And finally - leaders in the NFL ensure they are accountable for the team, both in results but also in caring for their team. Head coaches/Headteacher in the best teams/schools build a coherent narrative of where the organisation can a going. And going together. #SuperBowl
