The movie Inside Out is not just for kids and if you think it is, you are missing the entire point it is trying to make. The first time I watched that movie I balled my eyes out. Let me explain:
Joy constantly is trying to run things and keep her person happy and cheerful as everyone loves a happy and cheerful person and nothing can go wrong... right? Well no... something sad happens and sadness wants a turn in control so those feelings about the situation get processed.
Of course Joy doesn't like that and keeps suppressing those "negative" feelings because to Joy, sadness isn't fun (never is). But because sadness is getting pushed back deeper, sadness starts effecting parts of life, including memories, that once seemed good. Joy then tries
to kick sadness right out which leads to both Joy and Sadness disappearing, leaving only disgust, fear and anger. Those emotions often leave us feeling numb, which is exactly what happens in the movie. Those feelings then only focus on the fact Joy is gone and try to do things
to try and make their person feel Joy on their own, but it doesn't doesn't because anger, fear and disgust can't be something their not. Joy and sadness have to find their way back on their own, but this only happens once
Joy realizes that sadness is needed and an important emotion to feel. Once back, sadness has to be felt first to finally get out all those thoughts and feelings that have been pushed back down by Joy. Once expressed, joy can return.
This movie was to teach people that hiding your feelings to make yourself appear happy when you're not just so those around you feel better is not a healthy way of coping & leads to problems. The only way to get through bad times is to embrace/feel every emotion that comes along.
Sure, not all emotions are fun to feel, their not supposed to all feel good, but they are essential and they exist for a reason. We are human and we are meant to feel and move forward, not suppress and be held back. Suppressing and hiding out true emotions just brings inner pain
