It's like a carrier wave, a backbone upon which I can hang the rest of my daily activity.

Once established, such a pattern can and should be brought back into line with everyone else (to avoid such pressures re-smashing up the whole thing).
It's interesting to note that M.E patients' hermitic behaviour may indeed be the simple result of attempts to manage erratic energy supplies rather than saying anything important about personality or character.
