🏔Today is a big day for Voilà:

It's publication day for @ClimateChoices' report on the ways Canada can get to zero net emissions by 2050 and we helped them with a few visualizations.

Let me tell you why this is one of our most important projects to date👇🏻
First, net zero emissions is obviously a major challenge, the kind that we like to tackle because we believe in systemic changes. @ClimateChoices' contribution to the discussion is foundational and we are eager (not hyperbole) to help them get their message across.
Second, because there was room for us to be creative. In fact, it is why they approached us, to go beyond the technical graphs that they had developed for their report.

So we did.
This is one of our first D3 interactive, explaining an idea at the heart of the report: there are safe bets + wild cards among the solutions and both will play a role.

We helped with the narrative, developed the concept, the design and programming. https://climatechoices.ca/reports/canadas-net-zero-future/
Their scenarios include a wide range of uncertainty for each solution and for the sum of the solutions. The uncertainty is large for 30-year projections so we developed an unusual visualization to show it.
There is a combination of solutions, that they call the winning hand, with a lot of uncertainty about what will cause the emissions reductions so we showed the possibilities as an overlap. Also, it shows emissions and reduction on the same axis.
What started as an area graph of potential levels of oil and gas production ended up as a decision tree, better suited to show the various scenarios and paths.
Finally, what was a table turned into an illustration of 3 possible "energy systems" at the end of this transition. The isometric approach gives an aerial feeling to the technical illustration.
I see this project as a milestone for Voilà:, a moment where we show more of our technical and creative chops. You'll hear more about it, but I wanted to mention it on the big publication day. Stay tuned.
