Okay, now that I've found a way to get my hands on Revue Starlight, time to dig in. I'll be tweeting anything that pops into my head, and since I'm going into this without any knowledge of the plot whatsoever... I'm gonna be talking a lot and making a ton of conjectures. Beware.
Interesting opening sequence. Says that "Starlight" is the story of 8 girls, but if we count the two performing on stage (and I assume narrators), then there are 9 people in total.
At the end of the stairs there's something like a light atop a tower, so...? Some kind of goal? A hierarchy? And then there's the base of what looks like Tokyo Tower. Hmm. Guessing this is going to revolve a lot around towers and height and moving upwards, idk
Oooh I see.
Ay, it's a picture of the little girls from the opening sequence.
Neat camera trick, tracking her head movements. I like little things like this
Cute stuff. So the crown hairpin is an important part of her character, then.
Ah? But the roommate (Mahiru?) doesn't resemble the other girl in the picture, though.
This is interesting. She announces herself (to an empty room, which, huh...?) and enters the practice room, then approaches the "position zero" saying it's the center of the stage. But she doesn't actually step into that position. She just stands by and sets her eyes on it.
Okay, so we're definitely at some kind of performance school.
Lol
Good God I almost forgot AiAi is in this. Scared me the hell out when she started singing
"Non non dayo" and "ichiban good"
1. Her literal name is Big Banana. Banana hair. Banana-chan.
2. What's that last line supposed to mean?
Oooh, and here's Ayasa's character, I'm pretty sure
Bold of Karen to speak on this, yeah
Oooh, I really like this. The way the music, which has been building up with every new character, comes to a halt; and the fixed camera switches into a dynamic one that follows Maya as she claims position zero. You immediately get the sense that she's at the top. In control.
Huh.... Now that I look back at it, two of these things are not like the others.
Yup, it's just them.
Ahhh, so that's how that is.
Hey, this is along the lines of the opening sequence, isn't it? Something about growing closer as they clash, or similar to that.
Lol what's this about
So they're doing the same play every year? Interesting.
This has to be Banana's room, lol. So she likes bananas and, uh, frogs, probably
Okay, so Banana seems like she likes to keeps pictures of her friends. And she has a separate one for Junna, so they're probably close. The picture in the frame has to be from their last performance of Starlight, then. Hmm. Maya and Claudine look like they're central to that one.
Right, so there looks to be a theme of repetition, but rather than stagnation it'd be supporting growth and experience.
Hehe. Mahiru really likes Karen, doesn't she
This is kinda funny. You have Futaba and Kaoruko, operating more or less like a unit with perfect unison, watching... whatever is going on between Claudine and Maya (looks like a one-sided rivalry atm). But we also learn that the two of them are effectively the top of the class.
Hmm. Adding this to what I noted about Karen entering the practice room earlier, there seems to be a highlight on Karen's unwillingness(?) to push herself forward.
Also, Mahiru's twintails(?) flicking as she panics. Cute.
Nana likes taking pictures, huh. She took one earlier on in the scene, too. Plus all that stuff on her desk and the cork board.
Ah, girl from Karen's childhood picture.
Very cool transition into a dream(?) sequence. Wheel revolutions, into a cog, into a machinery kind of system. And then literally pulling the curtains open. Also, Tokyo Tower again. So it's definitely important to the story somehow.
Ah...? A push from the back here can mean 2 things... Could be something like a betrayal, or, if connected to what I was thinking about Karen not stepping up, it might be a push forward. Like a leap of faith. Though, Karen is falling here, so I'm leaning towards the 1st one lol
Well dangit maybe it's the second interpretation. Or maybe both or neither. Idk. Side note: Love how the way she's falling is in sync with the music, like a lot of other motions in this anime. There's a very real element of theatrics that keeps this moving.
Huh, what?
Ooooh I am very intrigued. Tried flipping my screen backwards. "Day 1 Audition" "And it shall be bestowed upon you/The star which you have longed for..." Interesting stuff.
Huh... So everyone else got the intro frame in with their faces, but Hikari's is just on a white background. Welp, I guess it can't be helped. She just arrived.
Heh... So the whole main cast *is* 9 people. But Starlight is an 8 people play, still.
Lol everyone just dunking on Karen
There's a huge difference in the way they carry themselves. Karen is energetic, bouncy. Mahiru is expressive with her body movements, too. But Hikari remains mostly impassive throughout.
I like the juxtaposition of this. Karen is in the light, while Hikari is in the shade. However, with the way her response to Karen is set up, I'm inclined to believe that there *has* been a change, which Karen is unaware of. In that context, then, Karen is the one in the shadows.
Love how there's stuff happening in the background, lol. Hikari enters, picks up Mahiru's shirt, examines it, then leaves.
Oof. There's a sudden distance, but just barely out of reach.
Tokyo Tower again, huh. What's that in the center, though...? Looks like, erm... They took the top part of the tower, turned it upside down, then put it down there? The Tokyo Tower keeps showing up in ways it shouldn't, lol
Ah, Hikari got a special leotard like Maya and Claudine, too. She's one of the tops then, right?
Hmm...? Does she recognizes Hikari as a threat?
9 people, 8 roles in play, 7 showers. Lol
Ah, she has the picture. So then she does still care a lot.
Why would you look for her... there?
Ah? Maybe this is what Maya recognized earlier on with Hikari. That's an interesting observation to make though.
AUUUGGHHH THIS IS SO GOOD I CANNOT OVERSTATE HOW EXCITED THIS MAKES ME. God. Usually with an elevator you know it's like, a portal to another world. You expect her to get in the elevator and discover something. You *don't* expect a literal slice of "reality" to shift like that.
It follows the same recipe as a typical "portal": You get in, you go there, meanwhile in the real world things looks the same as always - But here it subverts the typical expectation. The entire section surrounding the elevator moved, rather than just the elevator door opening.
AAUUUGHH Something awesome is gonna happen, isn't it
Oh My God what in the world. Tokyo Tower? Underground Theater? The props hanging around in the background? First day of auditions?
Ah? Revue? Like a theatre act?
Oh good God is this one of those fight to the death things
Oh, hey. She's in the audience. Like in the opening sequence, hehe
Ooooh it's like a musical fight. Cool
Ayy that's some good fight animation
A Giraffe... Like on the calls? That was a giraffe logo on the "Audition" call that Junna gets, too, right? I'm fairly certain
Why a talking giraffe of all things to talk
Hmmm, so the goal for all these girls is to become the top star? This applies regardless? Or just within the context of the "revues"?
Unrelated but I like the font used, hihi
Ah, so the light on top of the tower in the opening sequence must be this Star Tiara, then
Hmmm.... So there's something about devotion going around.
Oop. Not a fight to the death, then.
I liked the use of props as the fight moves along, and now lighting, too. It's a fight scene, more or less, but it's still very much embedded in a theatrical kind of stage. Very appropriate to the premise of the anime.
Ayy, so I was right to point out Karen's problem, earlier. Now that one of my conjectures has been acknowledged, I shall have a massive amount of unearned confidence in all my other interpretations, muahaha
Yay, stepping up.
Ah, Karen's falling again. But this time rather than being pushed down she's jumping out of her own will, and looks like she's jumping for Hikari. Maybe this is what the dream is about? Hikari would be the driving force behind Karen's major change?
Cool sequence. Looks like her hairpin is used to fuel this "mass production" process? Maybe a symbol for sacrificing individuality for the sake of commodity and expendability? Idk. If this is a criticism of theatre and the entertainment industry, as I heard it was, then probably.
Awww this is really cool
I keep thinking about it earlier but this show really has sorta a... Utena kinda vibe? It's blatant now, though, lol.
That's one way to translate "BaKaren", eh? Well, Hikari definitely knows something.
Oop, I guess this is the end of it. Hmmm. I should revisit the opening, actually. There's something I just thought of.
Eeeyup, Hikari grabs the light (Starlight?) and holds it to her chest. Don't know what that could mean yet, but it oughta mean something.
Another thing, I thought it was just a 'Red Team - Blue Team' type deal, but it looks like Hikari is the only person whose revue cape is blue? Assuming this is everyone else's revue outfits. She also wears it on her right shoulder rather than left like everyone else. Noteworthy.
This intrigues me a lot. I noticed that Karen is the only one not present in person in this stairs shot. A fallen cape means defeat in a revue, but her weapon is there pointed at the ground, so... I would read this to mean something like a forfeit? Deliberate loss, somehow?
But then roll back to Hikari pushing Karen off of Tokyo Tower in that dream sequence, too. Karen just said her goal is to become stars with Hikari. Combining the "betrayal" reading of this moment, and the stuff I said in the tweets above, hmmm. Hikari very fishy.
But eh, we'll see. That's EP1 of RevStar. Solid first episode. I got really excited once we hit the underground revue part of things. Can't wait to see more, hehe. I'm the kind of person who loves reading into details, so based on this Ep, I think I'm gonna have a great time here
