Data collection will happen through the Nat’l Center for Education Statistics at IES. Good news, they are experts – @EdNCES runs NAEP, Schools and Staffing Survey, etc. Data will be collected monthly from 7k elementary and middle schools, a nationally representative sample. /2
Data will include % of schools that are open full-time in-person, hybrid, and fully remote; with info disaggregated by race/ethnicity, SES, English learner status, and disability status; and where schools have prioritized some of these student groups for in-person instruction. /3
In addition to school status, data will also include a few key indicators around student engagement: student attendance rates and synchronous instruction. Attendance rates will be disaggregated by student subgroups. /4
Quick flags/Qs: 1-Nothing on HSs in here. While they are not a part of @potus 100 day reopening goal, there are HSs open (and not open) across the country. 2-Will synchronous instruction info be disaggregated by student group? Hope so. /5
3-Not to be that person, but the details matter. There are roughly infinity statuses between fully in-person for all students, and fully remote for all students. All students or some students? All the time or some of the time? Can families choose? /6
4-Will data be gathered on which students and families are selecting an in-person option, or just the demographics of the schools offering? /7
5-Finally, this will not include community infection rates, which some have argued should be part of any collection.
