HAPPENING NOW: #HB1231 is being presented to the House Education Committee by @OnTheMarkforAR.

The bill prohibits and penalizes schools that include The 1619 Project in their curriculum.

It’s originally been amended to exclude higher education.
@OnTheMarkforAR is starting off by stating what the bill ISNT since he says there’s a lot of misinformation.

#1 - “The bill does not take away the teaching of Black History.”
#2 - “The bill isn’t saying you can’t teach about 1619.”

It’s only stating that teaching the 1619 Project is a thesis in search of evidence and shouldn’t be taught as factual history for WHY or HOW America was founded.
Representative Reginald Murdock chastises @OnTheMarkforAR for impeding on the process of education.
A question that came up is whether or not @OnTheMarkforAR understands the process of social study education as it pertains to teaching AA history.

(i.e. discussing different perspectives & how Arkansas AA history highlights 1619 as the starting point of the colonial period).
Other things that came up: Parental consent for students to learn the 1619 Project.

Is @OnTheMarkforAR confident in districts creating their own curriculum.

He says that as students sometimes feel unheard, teachers feel unheard if they go against the bill.
VIDEO: Representative Brown reminds that white washing or erasing of Black history has happened in the early 1900’s which created a direct result of educators today not REALLY knowing history.

A reminder that lawmakers need questions and not comments.
VIDEO: 18-year old Jack Clay just graduated from a Bryant School district high school.

He’s against the push of this bill highlighting how social studies has impacted his life.
VIDEO: A 13-year social studies teacher for the bill notes the inaccuracies 1619 Project.
VIDEO: Ivory Jackson says he’s FOR the bill because he’s read through the 1619 Project & it’s slanted to one side. It’s not the truth.

“If your kids came home & said the teacher taught 1+1=3 then what?”
VIDEO: Scott Hamilton is against the bill. He says history itself is a narrative. The 1619 Project is simply a project by @nhannahjones in her research.
VIDEO: TJ, an Asian-American is passionate about not passing the bill. Asking how they’re willing to monitor a free education thats easily accessible.
Michelle with the Arkansas Teacher Association says educators have been on both sides of the fence but SheS against the bill as the most hesitation comes from the notion of control by lawmakers.
There’s a total of 12-15 people signed up to speak (Some weren’t in attendance) and only 3 people were for the bill. The rest are against it.
There you have it ladies and gentlemen.
