Things to do in Kafue National Park, Zambia, a thread! It is the largest NP in Zambia & second largest in Africa & it stretches across three provinces - Central, Southern & North Western Province! Wow! When you are there, you can even feel how vast it is!
How do you get there? You can drive & it takes between 2-7hrs from Lsk to get to whichever part of the park you’re going to & how far in it is. The park also has many airstrips if you’re looking to charter a plane privately because no airline currently flies there.
To note: Some camps aren’t accessible all year round & close in the rainy season from Nov - April because roads are inaccessible. However places like Ila Lodge & Mukambi are open year round & are lovely for a break. Close to Lsk too. Busanga Plains opens from July to Nov!
Where to stay? Starting with Southern & Central parts of the park which can be accessed using the spinal road after Mumbwa. I’ve stayed at Musungwa Lodge which overlooks Lake Itezhi-Tezhi & is stunning! This was my 1st venture into Kafue NP! Affordable & accessible year round. 🙌🏾
Kaingu Lodge - Southern part of the camp. The loveliest owner run luxury tented camp on the banks of the Kafue River! Gil is so knowledgeable & will make you fall in love with the place! They have camping option too & a nice ablution block & views for that option. Mid-range cost.
Kaingu Lodge cont. Views at the camping site. You get your own personal space & ablution block for your group which I thought was lovely. I’m not a camper but this I could give a go! Located close to the rapids too, give it a go when you visit if you can! 😍 On my to do list!
Kaingu Lodge cont. Sundowners at Mpamba rock! Out of all the camps I’ve visited in Kafue NP, I thought Kaingu Lodge offered a lot in terms of other activities rather than just game drives & boat cruises. Btw, they also do a killer sundowner boat cruise here with views for days!
Onto Fig Tree Bushcamp. This is a hidden gem in the central part of the park. You park your car at Mukambi Lodge which is 2.5hrs away from Lsk, then they’ll transport you across the river into the park which takes approx 1.5hrs. Luxury & intimate with only 4 stilted chalets. 😍
Fig Tree cont. If you’re looking for a relaxed place to go, this is where you need to be. It’s so quiet & staff are excellent! Absolutely enjoyed the food too. We saw Ellie’s, lions & antelopes on this trip. Game drives were still fun! Price point - higher end. #zambia #safari
Kafue River Lodge in the North-East of the park. First time ever visiting this side of the Kafue NP & it was a little further from Lusaka. Even had to cross a pontoon to get to it. This was my first post Covid trip to support local & I wanted something diff! Loved it! #zambia
To do at Kafue River Lodge; Game Drives, Bike Rides, Fishing, Boat Cruise, Bush Breakfasts & relaxing on their deck! It’s a rustic camp but clean & Newton the manager was so lovely! Price point: mid - high but negotiate for local rates! 😜😅 We had the camp to ourselves too.
We saw a cheetah too at Kafue River Camp that had just hunted a baby impala! It was so lovely to see! 😍🙌🏾🥰 First time seeing a cheetah in a Zambian NP and what a treat it was! Worth visiting Kafue NP to spot cheetahs alone! #zambia #safari #visitzambia #cheetah
Saving my best for last! BUSANGA PLAINS in the far north of the Park. Journey takes a while on a bumpyish road but it’s worth it! Dig deep because prepare to be wowed! Most lodges in Busanga are expensive but JM Safaris offers excellent camping options in a clean environment.
Busanga is known for its prides of lions & it didn’t disappoint. We saw lions on each game drive and there’s a lot of wildebeest, red lechwe etc as well! If you’re an wildlife lover, this is the place to come! Also because it’s a plain, it’s easy to see far in the distance! 😍👏🏾
The Kafue National Park is said to house over 50 mammal species so it really is a unique place to visit & see a variety of animals which is so special. Because of the vastness of the park, animal spotting isn’t always easy but you’ll likely find it easier in the drier months.
If you’re super adventurous the Busanga Plains also offers a hot balloon ride (weather dependent) over the beautiful Plains! This is a must do at least for me once in my life when I’ve saved up enough coins! 😅
There are Tsetse flies galore here once you leave your camp but don’t let it put you off! Note that nothing you do will make them leave you alone, so learn to love them & take insect repellant & wear long clothing! Also, 4x4 cars recommended for majority (pls enquire) of camps!
Highly implore you to visit & support the amazing men & women working for the Dept of National Parks & Wildlife and conservation orgs who are protecting our animals daily! By paying park fees, you’re feeding a whole ecosystem from employment, animal sustainability & more! ❤️
