The Divine Feminine, by Mac Miller.
(album breakdown):
recently, i’ve found myself to love this album because of the truth it speaks about intimacy. it’s one of those albums where you have to relate for it to just click. i’d like to break it down for you all, as i know i’m not the only one who sees themselves in this amazing project.
Congratulations:
this heavenly, sombre song is a great introduction to the rest of the album. the sounds evoke such strong feelings and so do the lyrics. mac talks about his lust and love for the divine feminine. such an immensely powerful intro because it set the tone so well.
Dang!:
this is the most popular song on the album and it’s not hard to see why. i feel like anderson .paak just has great chemistry with everyone he works with. it’s such a feel good track, it’s impossible to not smile when listening to it. they bounce off each other so well.
Stay:
he carries on this divine sound, to tell a story about wanting a girl to “stay just a little while”, when in reality he wants to her to stay forever. the trumpets on this are so well implemented, the choir used is great and mac raps as solid as he usual. a great track.
Skin:
this track is supposed to display the sexual intimacy of a loving relationship. mac shows his lust for this girl. he wants to show her just how much he loves her; he points out everything he finds attractive about her. he describes the divine feminine.
Cinderella:
mac is confident that he’s found the one, he’s aware of the effect he has on women, but he doesn’t care about any of that. he just wants to be with this girl so that he’d have nothing to worry about ever. he even refers to her as “Cinderella” which is endearing.
Planet God Damn:
mac is comparing his current infatuation in this girl with past relationships. he realises that those were just dumb crushes he had and that this is what true love feels like. njomza acts as the female voice of the relationship, reciprocating all these feelings.
Soulmate:
this is my favourite off the album. it just speaks to me. hits so different now that i’m experiencing similar feelings. this is easily a top 10 mac song as it was what birthed that iconic “water”music sound that he later went on to develop in future projects. i love it.
We:
mac is so in love with this girl that he doesn’t want to use his energy to argue with her. he wants to channel that energy into something positive. he’s not mad at her at all as he says “it’s alright, it’s okay”; a reflection of his infatuation getting rid of all negativity.
My Favourite Part:
here, mac has collaborated with his girlfriend at the time, ariana grande. their chemistry on this is prominent. the soul elements of it are well integrated, and ariana’s vocals are flawless as usual. both of their vocals on the chorus mesh just perfectly.
God Is Fair, Sexy Nasty:
one of kendrick’s best vocal performances in my opinion. he depicts a man in lust so well as he yearns with mac for some sexual pleasure from their own significant others. it closes with mac’s grandmother talking about her husband over some piano. divine.
