In a few years when there is another coup attempt in the USA, people will look back and say it was because no one who led the 2021 coup attempt faced any consequences.
The parallels with Hitler’s first attempt to grab power and the failure to take him seriously are chilling.
Just because we narrowly escaped the assassination of several government leaders and a full-on coup attempt does not mean our democracy is secure. Anything but.
If anything, extremist elements (and we really have to include the whole GOP here) are emboldened. No punishment, and they can leverage this to raise money and recruit followers.
There is no longer any possibility of “bipartisanship” because we just have a group of politicians imperfectly governing and another group that sanctions violence for its political objectives.
Biden needs to double down on good governance. Part of that should be encouraging the formation of a meaningful opposition party (as opposed to a bunch of seditionists).
This is a faith issue because fascism is incompatible with the Gospel. You cannot honor the worth of every person with tyrannical power in place. And we’re a hair’s breadth away from fascism.
