This whole NYT / SSC thing is so depressing.
I’ve been an avid SSC reader for years and the portrait @CadeMetz paints of his writing feels unrecognizable.
I want nothing to do with a “dark enlightenment.” The connection Metz tries to make between it and SSC is deeply untrue.

At the same time, it’s clear that some of SSC’s fans are truly awful.
I saw Balajis offer $1k in Bitcoin for his legion of fans to create memes against Taylor Lorenz. Many went much further and harassed her. That is clearly abhorrent.
But why blame SSC for it? There is no link.

Also, I hadn’t read some of the older posts Metz links to, and when I read them felt like it was an inferior version of the SSC I know and love. Cancel-worthy? No. But the post attacking feminists who attack “nice guys” does not deserve praise, IMO.
Still, that post was from 2013 and I honestly don’t think it’s representative of what people love about SSC.
It’s just really depressing. The article feels deeply wrong but in ways that would take thousands of words to explain. Who will bother to write them? Or read them? Ugh.
