Since we on the topic of #Tulane. I can imagine many of those silent on #MedTwitter saying ‘well black trainees/docs should attend or work at #HBCU institutions if they can’t tough it out.”
Let’s revisit history w/the 1910 FLEXNER Report that we fail to properly teach about.

BTW: This
failure to call out & discuss the truth about the 1910 Flexner Report recently occurred in one of my public health classes led by a physician instructor.
I had to raise my hand and bring this fact to the attention of the entire class. 2/

This report was led by Abraham Flexner, an education specialist, who traveled to 155 medical schools to assess the state of medical education. By 1923, only 66 medical schools remained & 5 of 7 existing Black medical schools were CLOSED. #DNRTulane 3/ https://www.medpagetoday.com/publichealthpolicy/medicaleducation/87171
Also, in that report - Flexner wrote things such as…
“African-American physicians should be trained in "hygiene rather than surgery" and should primarily serve as "sanitarians," whose purpose was "protecting whites" from common diseases like tuberculosis.” #MedTwitter 4/

Then to add up until this year – @AAMCtoday had one of its most distinguished awards named after a man who disseminated racist and sexist ideas into medical education through that very report. 5/ https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/aamc-renames-prestigious-abraham-flexner-award-light-racist-and-sexist-writings
In short the system is working as intended.
Academic medicine is complicit in the racism still seen in medical education.
Your own silence makes you complicit.
The time to do a thorough review of your institution’s practices, titles, names, etc is NOW
