People grow up in different situations. But I was lucky, as were my kids, to have public libraries growing up. If there is a social cause dear to my heart, it would be increasing the number of public libraries and librarians so that everyone has access. https://twitter.com/jennfrey/status/1360959756165406720
For those unaware, public libraries will let you borrow books for free! All you have to do is bring them back after a few weeks. Can we just pause at what an amazing thing that is.
When I was in middle school, I picked up a book of Norse mythology. When I finished, I got a Greek myth book. When I came back for more, the librarian suggested I might like this book called "the Odyssey" (Fitzgerald translation). She was right, like really really right.
When I got to college and learned that they offered Ancient Greek, I took it because I thought (1) that is a crazy thing, uselessly wonderful thing to learn and (2) I can read the Odyssey in the original!
When my kids were young, we regularly went to our local library, where -- and I cannot stress this enough -- they let us take books home! I let them loose to choose whatever they wanted.
I will forver be grateful for public libraries. I still get most of my fiction books from the public library. I wish that every child had the priviledge of public lending libraries, with the amazing librarians that staff them, so they could find their own books to love. /rant
