@IPCC_CH WGI is having its last #AR6 Lead Author Meeting this week - online. An important meeting to consolidate the final report chapters and the technical summary.
I am enthusiastic to see the stage of the report now!

It has been a long journey for WGI co-chairs and vice-chairs, starting 5 years ago to develop a roadmap for the report, with the innovative outline designed after an intense brainstorming almost 4 years ago.

This journey would not have been possible without the impressive support provided by everyone in the WGI Technical Support Unit!

It is an honor to work with the bright and diverse group of coordinating lead authors, lead authors, review editors, selected 3 years ago, and the chapter scientists. They all bring unique expertise onboard.
More than 60% of the WGI authors are new to the IPCC process!

After three physical lead author meetings in 2018 and 2019, we were planning for the next steps of report preparation to be as safe and as predictable as possible : the main concerns were related to the timely availability of cutting edge research in peer-review publications.
Someone needs to update this visual representation of IPCC report preparation steps to account for what happenened in 2020.
We were preparing the last lead author meeting when the COVID-19 pandemic irrupted.
After an IPCC plenary session in February 2020, almost a year ago, all IPCC activities were moved online and the timelines had to be adjusted, with 3-4 month delays.

Working on the WGI assessment has been particularly challenging in this context and I thank all the WGI contributors for their dedication and efforts.
Intense online activities took place from June to September 2020. They were crucial to consider the numerous review comments received on the second order draft (these are key for the quality of the assessment!) and for coordination across chapters, and with the WGII and WGIII.
This week, our last virtual lead author meeting (e-LAM) is important to take stock of where we are, and define what remains to be done to ensure the highest scientific and presentation quality standards for the WGI report.
It is impressive to see how resilient everyone has been, in the current exceptional circumstances, to provide a rigorous, exhaustive, transparent and robust assessment of the state of climate science knowledge.
The WGI report is eagerly awaited by everyone with an interest in climate science, climate policies, and climate action!
