Small cold weather tips from a northerner:
-put a rolled towel down at the bottom of doors to seal the gap
-you can use a candle flame to find the source of drafts: hold it near windows/door frames/outlets/other building seams and see where it flickers. Try and seal leaks off.
If you have to drive:
-let your car run for at least 5 mins before you start driving to let your engine warm up, driving a freezing engine is BAD for it
-drive SLOW. Don’t get confident. Apply brakes slowly and well in advance of where you normally would.
-if you start to slide, please try hard not to panic, even the most seasoned winter drivers slide!! Don’t spin the wheel around wildly- turn the wheel carefully toward the direction you are sliding- wait for the feeling of traction again before attempting to steer/use gas/etc.
-use main roads whenever possible and ALWAYS take your cues from the other drivers around you over whatever rules of the road you may know exist in a certain place. No one cares about a rules stickler when survival is on the line.
Otherwise, wearing layers is a godsend!! If you have power, make hot beverages! Fill a tall sock with dry rice, tie it off, and microwave it 1-2 minutes to make a mini heat pack (re-microwave whenever needed)!!
OH also if you have to drive, store a sleeping bag in your car if possible!! This is in case your car gets stuck or breaks down- you will need to keep warm until help arrives. Sleeping bags are best for retaining body heat during that wait!!
