Feeling totally exhausted by the inevitably of climate disaster now, and the huge gulf between urgency for action and our ability as societies to grasp that reality. But am holding onto prayer. 1/11
There are so so many signs that we've already failed to prevent catastrophe when it comes to climate, that we've already pushed earth over the limits and we've yet to grasp how many dominoes of decay are about to fall. 2/11
Even watching a mainstream Attenborough programme suggests we have tipped over the cusp into a future of so much unnecessary suffering and injustice, but we keep talking about small changes and hoping they'll add up. 3/11
The rage and clarity of XR and CCA resonate a lot this evening. We've failed to prevent so much disaster, and just like with the pandemic, actions continually taken now will reap impacts in the near future. 4/11
But despite what seems fairly obvious from the science and mainstream content like Attenborough is a huge failing of imagination from those in power, to facilitate the shift to a safer future. 5/11
We've managed tweaks, and some really important ones, but have failed to say 'right, this could be the end of us, so we're coming together to totally rethink how we operate and run society', in the way we did with the first lockdown but more so. 6/11
I just saw an article that estimates animal agriculture, by itself, is enough to push us over 1.5C. And at the same time so many of us are burning fossil fuels in our cars and boilers, more is being extracted and the crisis continues to escalate. 7/11
But this line of thinking doesn't seem to engage the masses. Like looking directly at the sun, we react by looking away, it's too sore for a long look. So we opt for gentler nudges and hopeful stories with our fingers crossed enough people will join in & bring change 8/11
But every now and then it all feels far too little in the context of the huge mess we're now facing. Which, my friends who've bothered to read this far, is why I'm so grateful for prayer and for communities like 'Climate Intercessors' where we can lament and grieve 9/11
And dare to dream of a world where radical change really might be possible, to repent our own apathy and insufficient response, and invite the God of the resurrection into this huge grave we've dug ourselves into. 10/11
Prayer really is what we need to keep us going, even if so many dominoes are already toppling. It keeps our eyes fixed on God's justice, not our compromises, and grounds our hope in a living and powerful and just God who is always on the side of the poor 11/11
