#Nigeria has long history of criminalising protest. @policeNG shot & killed about 400 protesting victims of the Bakolori water project in Sokoto in Apr 1980. Then Sokoto State govt claimed "only 25" were killed. 1 Yr later, in 1981, same govt arrested & jailed #SheikhZakzaky.
When @Mbuhari took over power in Jan 1984, he inherited #SheikhZakzaky in prison. After releasing him in May 1984, Buhari detained #Zakzaky again in Dec 1984. There were no charges. The detention was under Decree No. 2 by NSO
When @MBuhari was sacked in July Aug 1984, he had #SheikhZakzaky in prison. Gen Ibrahim Babangida inherited him, releasing him in Sept 1985. In 1987, Babangida used the excuse of the #KafanchanRiots to return Zakzaky to prison until 1989. He was detained again in 1991.
#SheikhZakzaky was mostly free until 1996 when Gen Abacha, on the foothills of his plans for eternal presidency, arrested & locked him away under no charges. When Gen Abacha expired in June 1998, he had #Zakzaky under #LockAndKey
Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar inherited #Zakzaky in prison & released him b4 handing over to President Obasanjo who, as Gen Obasanjo, had detained him in Zaria in 1978-79 as military HoS.
President Yar'Adua had more personal troubles presumably but under @GEJonathan, in Jul 2014, while Gen Minimah was #COAS , @HQNigerianArmy killed 34 followers of #SheikhZakzaky, including 3 of his sons, Ahmad, Hameed & Mahmud on a protest in Zaria.
Then in Dec 2015, @HQNigerianArmy again slaughtered hundreds of followers of #SheikhZakzaky & seriously injured him & his wife following an encounter with #IMN adherents on a march near Zaria. They also killed 3 more sons - Hammad, Haidar & Humaid. Since then, he's bn #LockedUp.
