How do you 'MBWA' (manage by walking around) in a remote world? Is it a random slack message to a team member?

Really loving what I am learning through reading @tom_peters. I hope to meet him one day!
For me...

I do try to make space to just touch base (unscheduled) with current and former team members...
Build/maintain the relationship and develop deeper empathy, listen for what they aren't saying and confirm my understanding...
Set time to co-create, brainstorm, work on problems together... (I tend to do more question asking/coaching, so it's not a power dynamic and 'do what I say' feel).
I also tend to manage UP by 'walking' around... if I wait on my boss's peers or his boss to do this, it's just not gonna happen. A simple 'hey want a coffee chat' - we tend to dive into what's keeping them up at night. I start to think how can I help or what am I seeing...
