People keep asking me for my thoughts on gondola so here's the cliff notes:
- If someone wants to do something innovative with their own money, we should let them
- If someone is lying, we shouldn't believe them.
- Public or private a gondola is FUCKING STUPID for public transit

That last point requires some elaboration because I'm comfortable saying that anyone who things that the current gondola proposal is in ANY WAY tenable as public transit is either:
1) Lying
2) Rich as fuck (and wouldn't use public transit anyway)
3) Don't understand proposal

If you are on an Edmonton transit bus, it will cost AT MINIMUM double to get on a stupid cable car to get you across the river.
Your alternative is to not get off the bus and also get across the river anyway.
Gondola is stupid.

The travel time on the gondola - you know the thing that is AS THE CROW FLIES THROUGH THE AIR, will take at least as long if not longer than riding a bus from the same start to end point.
For double the cost.
Unless you're a tourist, then 10x the cost.

The gondola is sustainable ONLY accroding to Prarie Sky, which requires it to be a bigger tourist and commuter draw by a factor of 2 to 3 compared to the best performing comparable North American gondolas.
It doesn't go to WEM. The numbers are bunk

The gondola doesn't exist in a vacuum. We're in a political climate with an antagonistic provincial government that wants to slash and burn public transit where possible.
There is only so much air in the room and we can spend it on LRT, bike infra, sidewalks or a stupid gondola

Should council vote against it, even if there's all private money, and loan guarantees and environmental protections, etc. etc.?
I dunno. I don't think I'd be upset if it passes the intense scrutiny it's getting and is approved
Personally? I'd vote against
Because it's stupid.

Ok last thing I'll say about the gondola is that I just stood indoors by my closed, triple pane window and shivered.
If you expect me to transfer from a bus to a gondola in this weather you're as stupid as the gondola idea is.
Gondola is playtime pretend public transit.
