We were told that even though our families didn’t have much, if we took out loans we’d earn enough to pay them back. Wages kept going down, and tuition kept going up, and no one did anything about those things but kept telling poor and middle class kids that. Cancel student loans
I remember crying when I signed my loan docs as everyone told me it would be fine. People with MAs make so much money! Cut to me as a teacher with an MA making barely enough to pay rent, a whole chump!
Quitting teaching to become a comedian, getting on tv, and finally making enough money to start paying off your loans isn’t a scaleable national plan, but cancelling student loan debt is.
I feel like the people who are tweeting at me that I should have made better decisions as a 17 year old should make themselves useful, build a time machine, and show up at my high school to tell me that.
A common response here: "The majority of student debt is owned by the rich." 1. They aren't THAT rich if they needed loans instead of mom and dad paying for school. 2. Even if you have a high income, if you are spending half of it on your loans, you're still not rich.
