disclaimer : i am not an expert on cinematography. it’s one of my hobbies. all screencaps are mine, none of them have been altered. this is just a theory. you don’t have to agree with it.
daydream is a song about the dichotomy of hoseok’s life - the responisibilies that leads his life as jhope and the desires he holds as a regular person named jung hoseok. while regular people yearn for fame and riches, he sometimes dreams for the ordinary life we lead (fbf of dd)
i am first going to talk about how this theme connects to the colors of the music video. the music video is filled to the brim with bright hues with solid backdrops, fun props, and colorful clothing. but the most important colors are the colors of the room hobi is in
the music video uses a lot of complimentary colors to bring out the contrast in the colors even more. they are colors that sit on opposite sides of the color wheel (green/red and orange/blue). complimentary colors are used in films to represent two contrasting ideals
we are first introduced to the room in the beginning and it’s a green room with red accents. in this room, the walls shrink in on him, keeping him to the confines of his bed - the only place he can experience the dreams he has.
(the once green hue of the room disappears as the saturation of the red increases and this is when the room is using almost dream-like effects to make it look like hobi is under water. it’s like red represents hobi’s fantasies while green represents his reality)
the walls fall away and he is on a bed in a dark room that showcases an orange view. this same room can be seen later on, when he is dancing around, but instead the room is blue and the view of the outside world is gone. it is as if the bed is his ticket to see what it’s like
outside, even if it is just his imagination. the stark change of the colors can be seen as the stark difference from the life he leads as j-hope and the life he imagines as a regular person.
the director of daydream also used a plethora of camera angles and shot sizes to further convey the message of daydream.
he starts the music video with a close up shot on hobi’s face. this is rare in films, for movies tend to start with an establishing shot that showcases the geography. this close up makes the audience know that this is not about how hobi interacts with his surroundings or how
things interact with him, but instead, what is going on inside of him.
(close up shots are used by directors to further gain empathy from the audience because it focuses a lot on character details.)

it then pans out to a medium shot of hobi on the bed. medium shots are the most widely used shot size in film for it is the most neutral. it is shot from around one’s waist area to above their head. it is the size most similar to how we interact with another person, and
i think it is the most used one here in daydream because in this moment, hobi does not want us to see him as j-hope; he wants to be seen as jung hoseok.
as hobi goes from the red/green room to the orange/blue room, it goes from a medium shot to a wide shot, which is when the subject is far from the camera and it is to accentuate the scale of the subject compared to their environment.
directors use it to often portray when subjects are lonely or overwhelmed. it is a way to show vulnerability because of how small one feels. this song is nothing but vulnerable. it is to show hobi’s feelings of yearning, but also how happy he is to have made his choice
because he loves his life. he chose this and even though the dream he has of another life strikes him, he genuinely enjoys living out his dream of being an artist.
