This is far from perfection. A thread. https://twitter.com/drjengunter/status/1361773520674430977
The birthing parent and family are involved and consented and participating... how?
This is in actuality a *perfect* example of how horrific medical teaching completely ignores individualized care, meeting people where they are, and carefully navigating the student experience.

The attending or preceptor should discuss birth and student involvement before birth starts. The team should have a transparent plan for how the teacher and learner will seamlessly communicate without interrupting the birth process.
Language that shames or scares people in birth must be immediately interrupted. I’m disgusted that this is satirized. It’s been a central focus of my career to teach learners in safe and empowering ways that reflect the same ethos we’d all hope to bring to patient care.
I’ve already heard from friends who’ve watched this video and been activated and horrified to remember medical student involvement in their birth experiences. What a shame that this attempt at satire in actuality is trauma and retrauma for so many.
I’ll have more to say. For now I’m fuming.
My ethical and clinic guts are in knots thinking about how this normalizes the medical education system’s misogyny and patriarchy.
Again and again, by anyone with OBGYN or MD after their name, birthing people and their exposed vulnerability are prime fodder.

I’m scrolling through those who’ve liked and commented on JG’s retweet, and the original video.
Many are people who I’d come to respect, admire, and uplift on this platform.
I’m disgusted.
