"sorry you had a bad adoption" if I've read it once I've read it 1000 times. Here's the thing, in my short time in the twitter Adoptee community I've met so many adoptees. Some had good adoptions, some bad, some just downright awful. When you get us together though
You will find that a huge majority of us are singing from the same hymnsheet. I'm adopted, I can't change that unfortunately but what I can do is try and change the future for our children. Adoption is not the be all and end all when it comes to guardianship.
Adoption severs links irrevocably. Adoption alters birth certificates. Adoption removes genetic mirroring. Adoption causes trauma. Adoption removes medical information that is important to us and to our children.
The other thing that is thrown at adoptees is "well what do you suggest? do you want all those neglected kids rotting in a care home?" OF COURSE NOT! those kids as you call them are part of my tribe, they are the next generation. I want them to receive the care they deserve.
And more. I wish them a good robust care system which is open to scrutiny., I wish them local authorities who fully explore kinship care. I wish them social workers who aim is family preservation and will work hard in supporting struggling parents to care for their own children.
I wish them legislation that recognised that being raised within your own culture is so important. I wish them more adults looking at long term fostering and special guardianships which allow children to keep their names and ties to fam whilst still being raised in a loving home
So you see, it doesn't matter what my own personal experience of adoption is. It's how we make sure the mistakes of the past aren't repeated that is important
Oh and if you're think of adopting internationally, DON'T it's beyond cruel to remove a child from their country of origin.
